CD storage alternatives ranging form CD paper sleeves to Tyvek CD sleeves

If you are like my family, you have CDs, CDRs, and DVDs in cases, in sleeves, in boxes, and stacked on top of the desk. Some of mine are even under the desk. What to do with all of those CDs? What is the best storage method?

There seem to be almost as many CD storage alternatives as there are types of CDs these days. The right CD storage solution depends on many factors such as how many CDs you have and estimate you will have, where you plan to store, and whether they are for short term or long term CD storage.

Here are just some of the CD storage alternatives:

CD Paper Sleeves
Pros — They’re thin and don’t take up a lot of space. They are inexpensive.
Cons — They’re thin and don’t offer much protection. Not easy to store on shelves, etc.

Cardboard CD Sleeves
Pros — They’re thin and don’t take up a lot of space. They are inexpensive.
Cons — Not easy to store on shelves, etc.

Plastic CD Sleeves
Pros — They’re thin and don’t take up a lot of space. They are inexpensive.
Cons — They’re thin and don’t offer much protection. Not recommended for long term storage; they have been known to stick to CDs and pull off CD labels.

Tyvek CD Sleeves
Pros — They’re thin and don’t take up a lot of space. They are inexpensive.
Cons — They’re thin and don’t offer much protection. Recommended for long term CD storage.

DVD Cases
Pros — DVD Cases offer a lot of protection. Easy to stack or place on shelf. Racks available.
Cons — They take up a lot of space. Can be expensive.

CD Jewel Cases
Pros — They offer a lot of protection. Labels are easy to read. They are easy to stack.
Cons — They break. They take up a lot of space.

CD-ROM Disc Cases — with the Flip-Up Cover
Pros — They can hold a lot of CDs in a small space. Thought to keep out dust.
Cons — Reading CD labels is a pain. You have to flip through the discs.

CD-ROM Drawers
Pros — Keeps CDs out-of-site.
Cons — Keeps CDs out-of-site. Some people just prefer to see their collection.

Three Ring Binders
Pros — They can hold a lot of CDs in a small space. Thought to keep out dust.
Cons — Sometimes the label is against plastic and may stick-especially in heat. You have to flip pages to find your CD.

CD Spindles
Pros — They can hold a lot of CDs in a small space. Cheap and easy.
Cons — It takes a long time to pull off all the discs and search for one.

CD Wallets
Pros — They can hold a lot of CDs in a small space. Thought to keep out dust.
Cons — Sometimes the label is against plastic and may stick-especially in heat.
